Maintaining the high-quality trail systems we all love is only possible through the generous stewardship of volunteers. Around Athens, Ohio, there are many volunteers completing projects on the trails year-round. Whether you’re a seasoned trail crew member or new to the trails, there are a variety of volunteer opportunities for everyone.
Why get involved as a trail volunteer?
Proper maintenance improves drainage, enabling trails to dry more quickly after rain, so you can get out and ride sooner. Brushing and trimming means that you’ll have a clear path, and you won’t get shredded on thorns as you skim along our trails. High quality mountain bike, hiking, and trail running trails need lots of maintenance work to keep them in good shape to ride, run, or hike on.
How to get start getting involved with local trail maintenance?
Athens Bicycle Club (ABC) members are helping to maintain 80+ miles of mountain bike trails that currently exist at Strouds Run State Park, Lake Hope State Park, the Wayne National Forest’s Baileys Trail System. The ABC often posts volunteer opportunities at Strouds and Lake Hope on the Club’s Facebook Group. The Baileys system is encouraging people to sign up as a trail steward on the Baileys Trail System Volunteer webpage.
