Strouds Run State Park
Because the Athens Trails system, which is under construction, includes
some usage (and will eventually include more) of Strouds Run State
Park, city officials have requested that ABC provide some thoughts, in
writing, regarding what would be ideal in terms of bicycle trails at
the park. The club members engaged in a brainstorming session regarding
this. Peter Kotses will draft a synopsis of the brainstorming session,
submit it to club members for review via e-mail, and present the final
document to the city.
Update on Letter to County Engineers Office
Tom Wolf updated the group on the status of a letter, signed by many
club members, that was sent to the County Engineers Office this summer.
The letter described problems that cyclists and others are experiencing
as a result of the county’s use of large gravel when chip and sealing
roads. The letter also requested that the county go back to using
smaller grave.
The Engineers Office sent a response that basically
explained that the large gravel is more affordable and that it
provides better
traction. Tom mentioned that representatives of the Hockhocking Adena
Bikeway Committee sent another letter to the County Engineers Office
requesting that they improve the quality of County Road 4, which
is the main
access point for the bikeway between Beaumont and Nelsonville.
Next steps: Tom
is considering convening a meeting between Engineers Office officials
and representatives of the cycling and motorcycling communities to
discuss the problems with the large gravel. This meeting might also
include representatives of the bikeway and the Chamber of Commerce. Tom
will keep us updated on plans as they develop.
Trail Maintenance at Lake Hope
Aaron Burk suggested that the club organize a trail maintenance
day at Lake Hope to reroute and correct the section of Sidewinder near the
power lines that is having big troubles with mud. Club members agreed that
those who end up riding at Lake Hope this Sunday (10/24/04) will take a
riding break and flag a reroute.
Club members and any others interested in working on the reroute are to
meet at the Sidewinder Trailhead on Saturday, Nov. 20 at 10 a.m. Bring
gloves, work boots, water and snacks, and any tools if you have them.
Peter Kotses will round up all the club tools and bring them.
Next Meeting
Club members agreed not to set a date for a next meeting until
there are enough agenda items to warrant a meeting.
