Letter to City of Athens
Club members decided to write a letter to the city (addressed to
Mayor Ric Abel) that will hit on the following points:
• The club support the city’s wishes to take ownership
of Strouds Run State Park
• We will offer an intention to continue to work on trails
as we have done in the past, but not offer to spend specific amounts
of time on specific trails
• We will mention our past record of volunteer hours as an
example of what might be expected in the future
• The letter will mention that the club sees this as an opportunity
to expand volunteer hours and encourage more volunteerism (due to
the park’s proximity to town compared to other past club trailbuilding
projects)
• The letter will mention how many hours have been volunteered
recently at Strouds Run
Club members also brought up the following points, which we decided
not to put in the letter because we decided to keep it short and
only focused on support of the city ownership concept:
• With increase in trails, there is an opportunity for hosting
mountain bike events at the park, which could bring economic benefits
both in tourism dollars and an opportunity for the city to charge
usage/permit fees
• Opportunity to have bike clubs at local schools
• Wish to have bridge created from Della Drive to the Dow
Lake Dam
Club members then worked together to draft a letter, which Peter
will submit to the mayor and cc David Reiser of the Strouds Run
Task Force.
